Hot Asphalt

           Am C G
1.Ah,it´s likely gone six months ago since I came to Dublin town,
        Am G
when I joined a gang of labring men who laid the asphalt down.
       Am C G
Shure now I wear a guernsey and around me waist a belt,
         Am G Am
I´m the gaffer of the boys who make the hot asphalt.

Chorus:
            C
So you may talk about your soldiers, your sailors and the rest,
      Am G
your tailors and your shoemakers to please the ladies best,
         Am C G
but the divil a one of them has got the graisy hearts to melt,
          Am G Am
like the boys around the boiler making the hot asphalt.

           Am C G
2.Well one day a copper comes up to me and he says to me "Mc Guire,
          Am G
will you kindly let me warm myself, around your boiling fire?"
         Am C G
Then he turned around the boiler, and upon the edge he knelt,
        Am G Am
and he toppled right into the boiler full of hot asphalt.

Chorus:

         Am C G
3.Well quickly pulled him out of it and we put him in a tub.
          Am G
And with soap and lots of hot water we did rub and scrub.
          Am C G
But the divil a bit of tare came off,it was stuck on just like stone.
    Am G Am
And every time we gave rub you could hear the poor man groan.

Chorus:

           Am C G
4.With the boilin´and the wettin´he caught a blooming cold,
         Am G
and for scientific purposes his body has been sold.
           Am C G
Inside the National Museum now he´s a-hanging by the belt,
       Am G Am
as an example of the dire effects of the hot asphalt.

Chorus:
